Why We Built Localgate

In the fast-moving world of software development, one of the most frustrating bottlenecks hasn't changed in years: getting your local work in front of other people.

You've built something amazing on your laptop. A sleek new frontend, a complex API endpoint, a webhook handler, or an IoT prototype. But sharing it? You either deploy to staging (which takes time and breaks your flow), fight with port forwarding and firewalls, or rely on clunky workarounds.

We got tired of that friction. So we built Localgate.

The pain we all know too well

Developers waste hours every week on temporary demos:

  • "Can you check this real quick?" → uploads to a throwaway VPS
  • "I need to test this webhook from Stripe" → prays ngrok doesn't disconnect during the demo
  • "Our client wants to see the mobile integration" → scrambles to expose localhost securely

Existing tunneling tools helped, but they came with compromises:

  • Random, ugly URLs that change on every restart
  • Strict limits on free tiers
  • Questionable reliability for production use cases
  • Limited protocol support
  • Privacy and data residency concerns

We wanted something better.

Our vision for Localgate

Localgate was born from a simple idea: exposing your local services to the internet should be effortless, secure, and feel like it was built for modern teams.

We set out to create a tunneling SaaS that solves the real problems developers and companies face daily:

  1. Instant, beautiful public URLs
No more remembering abc123.ngrok-free.app. With Localgate, you get clean, memorable subdomains (or your own custom domains) that persist across restarts.

  2. Built for real workflows
Webhooks, OAuth callbacks, mobile app testing, internal tool sharing, AI agent demos, on-prem customer deployments — we designed Localgate to handle all of them reliably.

  3. Security-first by default
End-to-end encryption, fine-grained access controls, request logging, IP restrictions, and the ability to run everything behind your own infrastructure if needed.

  4. Developer experience that doesn't suck
One-command start. Beautiful dashboard. CLI that feels native. Integrations that just work.

  5. Transparent, fair pricing
Generous free tier for individuals. Predictable plans for teams. No surprise bandwidth bills that punish you for building cool stuff.

What makes Localgate different

We didn't just copy the classics and add a coat of paint. We obsessed over the details that actually matter:

  • Persistent tunnels — your URLs stay the same even when your machine sleeps or restarts
  • Team collaboration — share tunnels with your entire workspace, with role-based permissions
  • Advanced protocol support — HTTP, HTTPS, TCP, UDP, and more
  • Observability — real-time request inspection, replay, and analytics
  • Enterprise readiness — SSO, audit logs, private cloud options, and on-prem deployment

Most importantly, we built Localgate as developers for developers. Every feature started as something we wished existed when we were shipping our own products.

The bigger picture

Localgate isn't just another tunneling tool. It's part of a broader shift toward making development more fluid and connected.

In a world of distributed teams, edge computing, AI agents, and increasingly complex integrations, the ability to safely and instantly bridge local → internet is becoming table stakes.

We want to remove every barrier between "it works on my machine" and "the whole team can try it right now."
